Monday, 17th March, marks the celebration of Ireland's national holiday, the feast of St. Patrick.
This day is celebrated not only in Ireland but in every corner of the globe and especially here in New England, which is home to a high concentration of the Irish diaspora.
Although St. Patrick's Day is celebrated on one day, a large number of Irish events and festivities is organised throughout the month of March and reflects different aspects of Irish heritage.
This period not only serves to remind us of the many aspects of our Irish culture but it also highlights the contributions that countless Irish people have made to their new homeland here in the United States.
The outflow of immigrants from Ireland to America is associated with the great famine in Ireland in the mid-1800s and continued almost without interruption for more than 100 years.
Most of those who came here did so out of necessity, leaving behind an impoverished island. Nevertheless, they retained a deep affection for their homeland, which has been passed down through the generations.
I have no doubt that those people would be pleased to hear how their Ireland has been transformed in recent years.
Ireland's recent economic growth has been remarkable and we have also seen a huge increase in US-Irish trade links as well as much greater reciprocity in investment flows between the two countries.
We are particularly pleased with the remarkable progress achieved in the Northern Ireland. We have achieved peace and we are now focusing our efforts on encouraging economic development, the economic dividend that peace can bring, so that we can build a peaceful, prosperous and sustainable future.
