Salvadorans Raise Their Flag / Izan Bandera de El Salvador

Every September 15th, the Republic of El Salvador commemorates its independence from Spain (1821-2008), and Salvadorans all over the world celebrate the occasion with pride.On Monday, September 15, 2008, in Lawrence, Mass., organized by a patriotic group known as El Salvador Presente, Salvadorans celebrated their 187th anniversary by raising their country’s flag. They have been doing this for five consecutive years.

The Honorable Consul of El Salvador, Roxana Patricia Abrego, came from Boston to join the group, gathered around Angel Corado, president of El Salvador Presente Committee, and Lawrence authorities across Lawrence City Hall for the ceremony.

Also attending were state Rep. William Lantigua, D-Lawrence and City Councilor at-Large Frank Moran, among others from the general public.

Consul Abrego spoke about the importance of this celebration in order to keep their culture alive and to honor their national heroes, while Professor Rosa Gonzalez expounded on their history and the independence of the country.

Reverend Felix Pereyra blessed the ceremony and all Salvadorans.

Lawrence Mayor Michael J. Sullivan, who could not attend the ceremony, sent a City Proclamation to Presente Committee president Corado and his fellow Salvadorans.

Izan Bandera de El Salvador

Todos los años, el 15 de setiembre, la República de El Salvador conmemora su independencia de España (1821-2008) y los salvadoreños en todas partes del mundo celebran la ocasión llenos de orgullo.

El pasado lunes, 15 de setiembre, 2008, en Lawrence, Massachusetts, organizado por un grupo patriótico conocido como El Salvador Presente, los salvadoreños celebraron tan importante ocasión izando la bandera de su país. Ellos han venido haciendo esto por los últimos 5 años.

La Honorable Cónsul de El Salvador, Roxana Patricia Abregó, vino desde Boston a unirse al grupo reunido alrededor de Ángel Corado, presidente de El Salvador Presente y otras autoridades al de frente del ayuntamiento de Lawrence.

El Representante William Lantigua, D-Lawrence y el Concejal at-Large Frank Morán se unieron al público en general que asistió a la ceremonia.

La Cónsul Abregó habló acerca de la importancia de esta celebración con el objeto de mantener viva la cultura así como para honrar a los héroes nacionales de El Salvador, mientras que la Profesora Rosa González disertó sobre la independencia e historia del país.

El Reverendo Félix Pereyra bendijo la ceremonia y a todos los salvadoreños dentro y fuera del país. El Alcalde Michael J. Sullivan no asistió a la ceremonia pero envió una proclama de la ciudad, que les fue entregada al Presidente Corado y sus hermanos salvadoreños.
