Statement from Providence, RI, Mayor David Cicilline, Monday night, Dec. 15, 2009, regarding Rhode Island Gov. Don Carcieri's proposed budget for the state:

Statement from Mayor David N. Cicilline regarding the

Governor’s Proposed Budget

The Governor’s budget proposal is a disaster for Rhode Island working families.  By decreasing investment in education and basic services and failing to honor the state’s obligation under the budget to return to cities and towns our share of the revenue we generate, this budget will deeply hurt Rhode Island families who are already struggling.

I’m most disappointed by the fact that the Governor has chosen to shift this burden onto the shoulders of local taxpayers instead of taking bold action necessary to bring about meaningful structural change.

As the governor has said himself so many times, “as goes Providence, so goes Rhode Island.”  I’m sorry to see that his proposed budget does not acknowledge Providence as the economic engine of the state as well the center of jobs, education, arts and culture.

The governor’s proposed budget will hurt many Providence families that are already in a precarious position.  Despite this, it is my job to protect the residents of this city and to mitigate the effects of this proposal if enacted.  We will marshal our resources to meet this challenge as we have throughout this crippling recession.
