  • Efectos secundarios.
  • Precio.

A new Spanish-language guide for Latino adults with type 2 diabetes explains the differences between various medications for diabetes, as well as their costs.

Released by the U.S. Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), "Pastillas para la Diabetes Tipo 2" (Pills for Type 2 Diabetes [2]) compares 10 generic and 13 brand-name diabetes medications.

The consumer guide says which of the medications may cause weight gain, which may cause side effects such as stomach problems or swelling, and what the medications' potential effects are on "bad" LDL (low-density lipoprotein) and "good" HDL (high-density lipoprotein) cholesterol.

In addition, the guide explains findings of medical research according to diabetes patients' concerns and questions. The explanations may be helpful to patients who use the findings when talking about diabetes medicines with health professionals, said the AHRQ in a press release.

Potential problems caused by the various diabetes drugs are explained as well, such as hypoglycemia, or too-low blood sugar.

The guide is based on a recent AHRQ-funded report, "Comparative Effectiveness and Safety of Oral Diabetes Medications for Adults with Type 2 Diabetes."

Using the research of 216 published studies, that report summarizes the effectiveness, risks and estimated costs for 10 diabetes medications.

"Pastillas para la Diabetes Tipo 2" and the English-language "Pills for Type 2 Diabetes [3]" are online at www.effectivehealthcare.ahrq.gov [4].

Requests for the free, consumer guide should be e-mailed to ahrqpubs {AT} ahrq.hhs.gov or made by telephone call to 1-800-358-9295.
