reception with Maria DeBarros after the concert.  

Through song, Maria de Barros expresses the important influence that music had on her while growing up in West Africa. Her music has been described by Billboard magazine as "a dose of Cape Verdean sunshine" and she has captivated audiences the world over by fashioning her own lively and vivacious interpretation of Cape Verdean music. 

Maria de Barros lived the first 13 years of her life in Nouackchott, Mauritania in northwest Africa. Her creative heart, however, lies in culturally rich Cape Verde, the birthplace of her parents. As a teenager, she moved with her family to Providence, Rhode Island and later to Los Angeles, where she was exposed to a potpourri of rhythms that enriched her musical experience. She developed a love for Latin music, 

and soon began singing in Spanish, one of the six languages that she speaks.
