Boston City Councilor At-Large Sam Yoon will be serving on the Rules Committee for the Democratic National Convention August 25-28 in Denver.

Howard Dean, chairman of the Democratic National Committee, appointed Yoon and called personally to congratulate him.

"The record turnout and enthusiasm we've seen for our Democratic candidates is a clear sign that Americans trust Democrats to bring much needed change to our country," said Dean. "Sam Yoon and our other outstanding appointees reflect the great strength, diversity and energy of the Democratic Party, and I'm confident their efforts will ensure our convention in Denver is reflective of our shared values and our nominees' vision for America."

Yoon says he's grateful for the opportunity. "I am both humbled and honored for a nomination to such a prestigious position. The Democratic Party, under the leadership of Governor Dean, is stronger than ever before," said Yoon. "I am excited about being part of a movement to take back the Congress and the White House."

Only 25 party leaders and elected officials from across the country are chosen to serve on the Rules Committee. An additional 161 members elected by each of the states' and territories' convention delegations will join the committee later this spring.

The Rules Committee is responsible for proposing the permanent rules for the convention, adopting the proposed convention agenda and making recommendations for permanent convention officers – all addressed as the second official item of business at the convention.

The committee will meet sometime in August, prior to the Convention.

Meanwhile, Governor Deval Patrick was elected by the DNC Executive Committee to serve as the co-chair of the Platform Committee for 2008 Democratic National Convention.

Sam Yoon – who represents all nine districts in the City of Boston – became the first Asian-American elected to the City Council in 2005. He was re-elected in 2007.

A graduate of Princeton and Harvard's Kennedy School of Government, Sam has experience as a public school teacher, community organizer and affordable housing advocate.
