Marching For Immigrant Rights

Hugo Adames and Hector Racine of El Latino Expreso contributed to this report.

WASHINGTON D.C. - Change takes courage.

On Sunday, thousands of immigrants and advocates are expected to descend upon the Lincoln Memorial to call for new comprehensive immigration reform.

Buses will be departing from Providence, Boston and New Bedford and all across the nation on Saturday as activists hope to kick-start the national debate on immigration. From Massachusetts alone, activists anticipate roughly 1,500 people to make the trip.

The event comes at a time when President Barack Obama has been meeting with Sen. Charles E. Schumer (D-N.Y.), who oversees the Senate Immigration Subcommittee, to work out a timetable and plan for Immigration Reform.

Schumer has been saying for more than 18 months that immigration reform is possible. Last year, he said it would be ready by Labor Day or early this year. But yet, the issue remains elusive.

Activists hope that Sunday's "Change takes courage" march will encourage those like Schumer and his Republican counterpart, Lyndsey Graham (R- S.C.), to introduce a new bill soon.

Protesto para reivindicar direitos dos imigrantes

WASHINGTON D.C. - A mudança exige coragem.

No entanto, o assunto continua elusivo.
