Kabuki theater developed in the 17th century and is closely identified with the culture of the “floating world,” the world of entertainment and pleasure that evolved as part of Edo-period (1603-1867) Japanese society. The prints in this exhibition include 18th- and 19th-century depictions of actors and the theater.
