Automobile crashes are the #2 cause of injury-related death in Massachusetts.  Snow- or ice-covered roads pose their own driving risks.  In this Portuguese-language audio clip, get tips for driving safely during the winter.  Among the tips:

1)   Drivers and passengers should always wear seatbelts -- year round, not just during winter.

2)   Never lock your brakes on icy roads.  Locking the brakes can make you lose control.  

3)   Increase the space between your vehicle and others, to give you a better chance of stopping safely.

4)   Be careful when driving over bridges and highway overpasses, which tend to freeze before the adjoining roads do.

5)   Test your brakes by gently tapping on them to see how much traction your tires have.6)   Check the windshield wipers and defroster.  Make sure they're in good condition.

7)   Before driving, remove ice and snow from your vehicle.  Ice or snow on car roofs can blow off, blocking your vision or endangering drivers and passengers behind you.

8)   Keep the fuel tank at least half full to prevent the fuel line from freezing.

9)   Make sure the windshield-cleaning solution in your car or vehicle is anti-freeze.

10)  Keep a blanket, flashlight and a small shovel in the trunk.  Check and replace batteries regularly.

DICAS PARA DIRIGIR NO INVERNO

Dirigir no inverno pode ser uma situação muito difícil e perigosa tanto para motoristas novatos como para os mais experientes. Já que os veículos respondem muito diferente em estradas cobertas de gelo ou neve do que em estradas secas e mornas, você deve praticar como dirigir no inverno. 

T   Reduza a velocidade segundo a condição na estrada. Dirija com cuidado e acelere devagar. 

T   Nunca freie bruscamente sobre uma estrada congelada, pois perderá o controle da direção. Se o carro escorregar no gelo, lembre-se de virar a direção no sentido contrário ao que estiver escorregando. 

T   Deixe mais espaço entre seu carro e os outros. Precisará de mais distância para frear de forma segura numa estrada escorregadia.  

T   As pontes e viadutos congelam mais rapidamente do que as estradas, uma vez que elas não têm a terra para isolá-las do frio. Tenha cuidado ao passar por uma ponte ou viaduto no inverno, pois podem ser muito escorregadios. 

T   Se estiver nevando, saia com o carro devagar. Teste os freios com pequenas pisadas no pedal para verificar a aderência dos pneus no asfalto. 

T   Tenha certeza de que o limpador de pára-brisas e o desembaçador estejam funcionando bem. T  Antes de sair, retire o gelo e a neve que estiver cobrindo os vidros, o limpador de pára-brisas e os faróis traseiros e dianteiros. Tire a neve e o gelo do teto para evitar que eles voem em outros carros na estrada. Isto pode ser muito perigoso! 

T   Mantenha o tanque de gasolina pelo menos na metade, para evitar que as mangueiras do combustível congelem. 

T   Use líquido para o limpador de pára-brisas com fluido anticongelante. 

T   Sempre tenha um cobertor, uma lanterna e uma pá pequena no porta-malas.
