Consulate of Cape Verde Opens Office in New Bedford

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. - Cape Verdeans living in the South Coast region will no longer have to travel to Boston or lose a day out of work to seek consulate services.
      
The Consulate of Cape Verde in Boston recently opened a satellite office in the Whaling City to meet the needs of thousands of Cape Verdeans and their descendents who reside in the area.
The office is located at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Professional and Continuing Education Center, 800 Purchase St., Room 109.
      
"There was really a need in the community for this kind of service," said Gunga Tavares, culture attaché at the Consulate of Cape Verde. "It's a matter of convenience."
      
Initially, the services will consist of providing different kinds of information, acceptance of applications for documents, and delivery of those documents.
      
"They can apply for passports, request birth certificates, powers of attorney, proof of immigration, travel documents or get official documents translated," said Tavares. "They would be no different if they traveled to Boston to get them."
      
Nicolau Gomes, who retired recently from the Portuguese Consulate in New Bedford, where he worked for about 30 years, will staff the new office. The space is open to the public on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Tavares said UMass Dartmouth has agreed to provide the space rent-free for two years.
 
"It took us two years to find the right place, because it would be a heavy burden on our budget," said Tavares. "It's working well."
 
With the active participation of the local Cape Verdean community - including associations, clubs and activists - the Consulate foresees transforming the space into a true community area, where ideas and projects oriented towards the empowerment of the whole community are born and developed.
 
"The idea is not just to have a space for consulate services, but also a community space," said Tavares. "We're working with the community to have a more culture-oriented space."
 
The agreement with the university will allow for the use of a conference room for meetings and other initiatives.
 
"The space is starting to define itself to what it is supposed to be," added Tavares.

Consulado de Cabo Verde Abre Escritório Satélite em New Bedford

NEW BEDFORD - Os cidadãos cabo-verdianos que residem na região do SouthCoast já não terão de deslocar-se a Boston ou perder um dia de trabalho para tratar de assuntos consulares.
      
O Consulado Geral da República de Cabo Verde em Boston abriu recentemente um escritório satélite na Cidade Baleeira de modo a satisfazer as necessidades dos milhares de cabo-verdianos e seus descendentes que residem nesta área. O escritório está localizado na sala 109 do Centro Profissional e de Educação Contínua da UMass Dartmouth, em 800 Purchase St.
      
"Existia realmente uma necessidade para este tipo de serviço na comunidade," adiantou Gunga Tavares, adida cultural no Consulado Geral da República de Cabo Verde em Boston. "Trata-se de uma questão de conveniência."
      
Inicialmente, os serviços consistirão essencialmente na prestação de diversos tipos de informação e recepção de pedidos para a emissão de documentos e entrega dos mesmos.
      
"As pessoas podem requerer passaportes, certidões de nascimento, procurações, prova de imigrante, ou tradução de documentos oficiais," explicou Tavares. "Não seria nada diferente se fossem a Boston."      
Nicolau Gomes, que se reformou recentemente após ter trabalhado no Consulado de Portugal em New Bedford durante cerca de 30 anos, irá prestar atendimento no novo escritório, que abre às terças, quintas e sextas-feiras, das 10 a.m. às 4 p.m.
      
Segundo Tavares, a UMass Dartmouth concordou em disponibilizar o espaço sem cobrar renda durante dois anos.
      
Através da participação activa da comunidade cabo-verdiana local - incluindo associações, clubes e activistas - o Consulado Geral conta transformar o espaço numa verdadeira área comunitária, onde ideias e projectos em prol do progresso da comunidade possam nascer e ser desenvolvidos.
      
"A ideia não é só ter um espaço para prestar serviços consulares, mas também para ter um espaço comunitário," sublinhou Tavares. "Estamos a trabalhar com a comunidade para termos um espaço mais virado para a cultura."
      
O acordo atingido com a universidade permite ainda o uso de uma sala de conferências para a realização de reuniões e de outras iniciativas.
      
"O espaço está a definir-se por si próprio, para ser o que é suposto ser," frisou Tavares.
