1)   Drivers and passengers should always wear seatbelts -- year round, not just during winter.

2)   Never lock your brakes on icy roads.  Locking the brakes can make you lose control.  

3)   Increase the space between your vehicle and others, to give you a better chance of stopping safely.

4)   Be careful when driving over bridges and highway overpasses, which tend to freeze before the adjoining roads do.

5)   Test your brakes by gently tapping on them to see how much traction your tires have.6)   Check the windshield wipers and defroster.  Make sure they're in good condition.

7)   Before driving, remove ice and snow from your vehicle.  Ice or snow on car roofs can blow off, blocking your vision or endangering drivers and passengers behind you.

8)   Keep the fuel tank at least half full to prevent the fuel line from freezing.

9)   Make sure the windshield-cleaning solution in your car or vehicle is anti-freeze.

10)  Keep a blanket, flashlight and a small shovel in the trunk.  Check and replace batteries regularly.

CONSEJOS PARA CONDUCIR EN EL INVIERNO

Conducir un automóvil en el invierno probablemente sea la situación más difícil y peligrosa tanto para conductores nuevos como para conductores con más experiencia. Dado que los vehículos responden de forma muy diferente sobre la nieve o el hilo que sobre una carretera seca y tibia, usted debería practicar conducir en condiciones de invierno.

 Reduzca la velocidad según las condiciones de la carretera. Maneje con cuidado y acelere despacio.

 Nunca frene bruscamente sobre una carretera congelada, puesto que así pederá el control del automóvil. Si su carro se resbala, recuerde girar el volante o timón en el sentido opuesto al que el carro se está resbalando.

 Deje un espacio más grande entre su automóvil y los demás. Se necesita más distancia para frenar con seguridad sobre superficies resbalosas.

 Los puentes y pasos elevados se congelan más rápido que las carreteras, dado que no tienen tierra por debajo para aislarlos del frío. Por lo tanto tenga mucho cuidado al pasar sobre un puente, ¡puede estar muy resbaloso!

 Si está nevando, arranque despacio. Pruebe los frenos pisando levemente sobre el pedal para ver cuánta adherencia tienen sus ruedas.

 Asegúrese de que el limpiaparabrisas y el desempañador se encuentran en buenas condiciones.
