Be Aware of the Importance of Your Vote / Conscientize-se Sobre a Importância do Seu Voto

At this point in the campaign, who among us doesn’t want to know the answer to that question – which candidate will win the U.S. presidential election?

All kinds of information is at our fingertips nowadays, with news media available 24/7, on the television, through the Internet, etc.

Polls and surveys have become an important tool politicians are using to engage the public in politics and to change their perception of whom the majority believes is the best candidate to tackle the nation’s economic crisis, health care, immigration, energy, and the war, among many other vital issues the country is facing.

Recent results from the major election polls in the United States have been varied, with some indicating that Barack Obama is leading the presidential race, while others show that he and John McCain are neck-and-neck. Honestly speaking, polls are extremely confusing and very often inaccurate.

I happen to agree with David Moore, founder of the University of New Hampshire Survey Center and former managing editor of the Gallup Poll, when he states that right now polls don’t tell the truth about the electorate and they don’t tell the truth about the American public either.

What we all know, and we don’t need national polls to tell us, is that the campaign will heat up as it moves into its final full week before Election Day on November 4. Nevertheless, the race can vary so wildly down the home stretch because of the way polls work - or as the case may be - not work.

Statistically speaking, we may only find out who our next president will be on November 4. And regardless of which candidate you favor, it is not only your right but also your responsibility to cast your vote on Election Day.

“Change” quickly became the motto of every political candidate that has entered the presidential race from day one. Now we are left with just two contenders who promise to take the nation down in a different path that reflects the needs of the people and puts them above politics.

So, we the people have the power to initiate that change by casting our vote and making a difference. Immigrants that are citizens should exercise the right to vote and make that their priority.

There are millions of foreigners and compatriots presently living in the US depending on you to voice their needs, and your vote can help them.

Don’t let the media cast your vote for you. Don’t let polls and surveys tell you whom you should vote for. Look deep into the presidential candidates’ agendas, listen to their own words, and try with the best of your knowledge to make an educated decision.

Remember that whichever candidate you choose, you will have to stick with him for four years. That should be enough to remind you of the weight of your vote.

A este ponto da campanha, quem não gostaria de saber a resposta para esta pergunta que parece ser impossível – qual o candidato que vencerá a eleição presidencial dos Estados Unidos?

Todo tipo de informação está acessível ao público nos dias de hoje com noticiários diários na televisão, na Internet, etc. Pesquisas e estatísticas tornaram-se ferramentas importantes para os presidenciáveis que se baseiam nestes dados para envolver o público na política, e mudar a percepção de quem a maioria acredita ser o melhor candidato para lidar com a crise econômica, saúde, imigração, energia, guerra entre outras questões vitais que o país enfrenta.

Resultados de pesquisas recentes de agências conceituadas nos Estados Unidos mudam periodicamente com algumas indicando que Barack Obama está liderando a campanha eleitoral, e outras dizendo que ele e John McCain estão lado a lado. Honestamente falando, pesquisas são extremamente confusas e freqüentemente incorretas.

Concordo com David Moore, fundador do Centro de Pesquisa da Universidade de New Hampshire e ex-editor executivo do Instituto Gallup, quando disse que agora as novas pesquisas não revelam a verdade sobre o eleitorado e nem sobre o público americano.

O que todos nós sabemos, e para isso não precisamos de pesquisas nacionais para nos informar, é que a campanha vai esquentar à medida em que se aproxima da última semana antes do Dia da Eleição. Todavia, tudo pode mudar drasticamente na última hora por causa da forma como as pesquisas influenciam o público ou, como pode ser o caso, por causa da forma como não influenciam.

Com todas estas variações, talvez só descobriremos quem será nosso próximo presidente no dia 4 de novembro. Independente do candidato de sua preferência, votar não é apenas um direito mas também uma responsabilidade como cidadão deste país.

“Mudança” rapidamente se tornou o slogan de todos os candidatos políticos que concorreram à presidência desde o primeiro dia de campanha. Agora nos vemos diante de dois presidenciáveis que prometem direcionar a nação por um caminho diferente que dê prioridade às necessidades do povo, colocando-o acima da política.
Nós, o povo, temos o poder de iniciar esta mudança não deixando de votar e fazendo a diferença na sociedade em que vivemos, trabalhamos e onde criamos nossas famílias. Todo imigrante que é cidadão deve exercer o direito do voto e fazer disto uma prioridade. Há milhões de compatriotas residindo nos Estados Unidos que dependem de você para dar voz às suas necessidades e seu voto pode ajudá-lo.
Não permita que a mídia escolha o seu candidato. Não deixe que as pesquisas definam para quem irá votar.

Analise com cautela as plataformas e planos de cada candidato presidencial, ouça seus discursos e tente tomar uma decisão sábia e ponderada. Lembre-se que seja qual for o candidato que escolher, terá que permanecer com ele na presidência do país por quatro anos. Isto deveria ser o suficiente para relembrá-lo do peso que o seu voto terá nesta eleição.
