Armenian Media Outlets Get Teen, Other Interns

WATERTOWN, Mass. (A.W.)-On Mon., July 14, six interns started their work at the Hairenik Association, assisting the editorial teams of the Hairenik and Armenian weeklies as well as the Hairenik online radio and TV.

The two-month internship program at the Hairenik will include lectures and tutorials on journalism, newspaper layout, and art, as well as trips to Armenian organizations in the Boston area and visits to other Armenian communities on the East Coast.

Ohan S. Manoukian, 15, from Belmont, Mass., is the youngest of the Hairenik interns and is working in the media and web department. He is a St. Stephen's Elementary School graduate and is now in his sophomore year at Belmont High School. In college, he wishes to pursue a career in medicine. He is an active member of the Homenetmen, participating in scouts and the soccer and basketball teams. He is also a member of the AYF [Armenian Youth Federation].

Raffi Kazanjian, also 15, is from Watertown, Mass. He translates articles from English to Armenian for the Hairenik Weekly. Also a St. Stephen's Elementary School alum, he is to enter his junior year at Watertown High School in the fall. In the future, he hopes to pursue a career that involves both business and medicine. He is a Homenetmen Scout and an active member of the AYF. He enjoys being part of the Homenetmen soccer and basketball teams.

Also helping in our Web and media department is Garin Parseghian, 16. Garin is also a St. Stephen's Elementary School graduate. He now attends Belmont High School and is entering his third year. His goal for the future is to pursue a career in business. He is an active AYF member and Homenetmen athlete, and plays on both the soccer and basketball teams.

From Princeton, N.J., Garo Youssoufian, 18, is interning for the Armenian Weekly. As a recent graduate of Princeton High School, he will be entering his first year in Rutgers University in New Jersey this fall. His interests include political science and biology. In his younger years, he attended St. Stephen's Elementary School up to the 2nd grade, and then moved to Texas, where he continued his Armenian education in the Sourp Kevork Saturday School. He is an active member of the AYF and enjoys playing baseball and running track.

Varak Baronian, 16, helps the ARS in organizing archives. Varak is from North Bergen County, N.J. He is a graduate of the Hovnanian Armenian School. In the fall, he is entering his third year of high school at the Dwight Englewood School. He is also the vice president of the N.J. AYF Arsen Chapter. Varak enjoys playing football and baseball.

On the Armenian Weekly's editing staff is Narineh Abrimian, 20. She is a graduate of the Armenian Sister's Academy and St. Stephen's Saturday School. She is an English major and music minor going into her senior year at the University of Massachusetts-Boston. She wants to pursue a career in English literature while also attending the Berklee College of Music. Narineh is also an active member of the AYF and Homenetmen.

Finally, the Armenian Weekly team of interns includes Anait Grigoryan, 22, who is the part of the Weekly's research team. Born in Azerbaijan, Anait and her family moved to Russia and then to America in 1992. She currently lives in Ohio where she attended high school and college. She is a recent graduate of Ohio State University with a BA in history and a minor in business administration. Her wish is to pursue a career in journalism and attending law school. Back in Ohio, she is an active member of the Armenian Church of Columbus.

The Hairenik Association extends its warmest welcomes to the interns.
