More than 400 people walked around the Lawrence Heritage State Park [in Lawrence, Mass.], carrying lit lanterns made by their children as part of the annual Canal IllumiNations, marking the closing of the third spectacular season of Live Lawrence!

Since early in the evening, a family-friendly festival centered on Lawrence’s historic North Canal in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, featuring music, dance and other entertainment reflecting the diverse Latino community in Lawrence.

The entertainment featured live performances by headline artists Zili Misik (Afro-Caribbean); Hector Cuevas and the Boston Latin Band (salsa and merengue); capoeira, a Brazilian martial arts troupe; the Mirabal Family Comparsa (Dominican dancers); Movement City, a youth program of Lawrence CommunityWorks; and to close, Veronica Robles and her Mariachi Band.

Canal IllumiNations gets its name from the tradition of floating handmade lanterns, created by local school children and others, down the Canal.

Children at Lawrence-area schools, youth centers and art classes, including the Lawrence YMCA, the Lawrence Boys and Girls Club, Esperanza Academy, Essex Art Center, Lawrence High School, Leonard Middle School and Lawrence YWCA created the lanterns from a combination of new and recycled materials.

At sundown on Sunday, October 12, 2008, all the lit lanterns were hung along the Lawrence North Canal, creating a beautiful display of reflecting lights over the canal waters.
