The following excerpt is from an article of JewishJournal.org.

Jewish Journal associate editor Susan Jacobs was presented with the David Frank Award for Excellence in Personality Profiles at the Jewish Press Association's annual conference in Washington, D.C.

She won the prestigious Simon Rockower Award for Excellence in Journalism for a story entitled "Artist Draws Inspiration From Rare Illness" that appeared in the December 6, 2007 issue of the Journal. The piece chronicled Salem artist Valerie Rosenberg's miraculous recovery from a crippling blood disorder.

"It's an honor for the Jewish Journal and me to be included with the big boys - The Forward and Hadassah Magazine," Jacobs said. "There were not a lot of smaller papers winning awards. It felt like we were in prestigious company.

"The story about Valerie Rosenberg's courage and bravery is really inspirational and I'm happy that we won for it. Her story gives courage to others who are facing and living with similar illnesses," Jacobs said.

She wrote that artist Rosenberg's Myelodysplastic Syndrome, rare in someone as young as 28, "came on like a freight train," leaving her hemorrhaging, needing an immediate bone marrow transplant.

Jacobs got an additional surprise tribute to her writing when [Massachusetts] Congressman John F. Tierney (D-Salem) came to the AJPA banquet to present her with a Certificate of Congressional Recognition for her journalistic achievement.

He offered her and her family, who came to the conference with her, a tour of the Capitol building.

Journal publisher Barbara Schneider noted that this is Jacobs' second Rockower award, having received one for news reporting in 2005.

Schneider was impressed with the AJPA conference for its forward thinking and message about the need for change in the
newspaper industry.
